To get the most out of renting a car in Egypt, you will need to follow the local driving rules. You will need to drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left. You will find some toll roads in Egypt, the main one being the Cairo-Alexandria road. In urban areas of the country, like Cairo, the traffic flow is controlled by the traffic police, and in the countryside you will find police checkpoints, so familiarize yourself with your surroundings. On some roads, particularly in the Sinai region, foreigners are prohibited from driving, so check your routes beforehand.
When you rent a car in Egypt, in order to drive, you must be at least 25 years old and hold an international driver's license, which is valid in Egypt for three months. In addition, you must have a normal driver's license and a valid passport. You will need to carry your driver's license, registration, and insurance documents at all times when driving on Egyptian roads.
When you fill up your rental car in Egypt, you can expect to pay on average 7.56 EGP (0.46 USD) per liter of petrol and 29.34 EGP (1.75 USD) per gallon. You will find that petrol stations are in abundance on major highways and that they are open from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm, providing full service. When you drive on Egyptian roads, it is important to adhere to the speed limits. On inner-city and urban roads, the maximum speed limit is 60 km/h (37 mph). For rural roads and on the outskirts of cities, you can travel as fast as 90 km/h (56 mph), while on highways, the maximum speed limit is 100 km/h (62 mph). Watch out for speed cameras on the highways, especially around Cairo.
