According to Chinese tradition, the Lunar New Year is a time for large family gatherings, the exchange of red packets, delicious treats and, of course, nosy relatives. We analysed the flight searches departing from Singapore for this occasion, and found that while many Singapore travellers may stay close to home during this festive period, others can’t resist the temptation to explore a new destination, or an old favourite, over the four-day weekend ahead.

The data shows that of all flight searches for February, 49% are for flights departing on 5 and 6 February alone, underlining that this public holiday is in high demand amongst Singapore travellers wanting to getaway for the festive period. It’s not too late if you haven’t booked your trip just yet. If you want to avoid the airport crowds, we recommend travelling on 4 February, as just 9% of searches are made for flights departing on this day.

Amongst the most popular destinations for the Lunar New Year, Bangkok tops the list as the most-searched, with an average airfare of S$306. The Thai capital is followed by Kuala Lumpur, with flights costing an average of S$167. In third place is food haven George Town, coming in at around S$310 on average per traveller. Tropical paradise Phuket and Taipei rank fourth and fifth, with average airfares at S$339 and S$497 respectively.

If you’re heading abroad for a long weekend, pick destinations in Australia or the United Arab Emirates. The most popular international destination is Dubai, with airfares averaging S$713.

Australia’s Gold Coast is the runner up with average airfares of S$719, followed by Darwin (S$512).

Note:  Results are based on travel searches made between January 2015 and January 2016 for travel in February 2016 on KAYAK.sg. The Lunar New Year long weekend is defined as 5 to 9 February 2016. All searches analysed are for return flights and prices are based on the average cost in Singapore dollars. Flight prices quoted may be subject to change or conversion rate fluctuation and may no longer be available. Prices may vary depending on flight route, flight segments, departure airport and other factors.
